C.L. Frates and Company was founded by Clifford L. Frates in 1913.  The Company has grown to a business managing captive insurance companies with  $200,000,000 in assets. The Frates company got its start as an insurance agency insuring the energy business and managing insurance programs for many of the early oil field wildcatters.  Its experience in the “oil patch” ultimately gave the company experience in international insurance markets. Energy accounts have taken C.L. Frates’ executives around the world arranging insurance coverages.

The Captive Administration Department of C.L. Frates and Company provides comprehensive administrative services to various single parent and trade association owned insurance companies. Most of these companies are U. S. domiciled insurers, but Frates has some customers that utilize offshore captives. Among Frates' customers are professional liability insurance companies that insure thousands of doctors and hundreds of health care facilities. Also, Frates manages a company that provides comprehensive coverages to 19% of all the banks in the United States. Captives managed by Frates have insured offshore drilling rigs in many oil and gas preserves, mining and chemical production facilities.
